I’m Monty, a graphic designer based in Brighton. I work across branding, print, digital and web design, with a long-standing interest in identity systems and print-led work.
I didn’t come into design through a formal academic route, which means my practice has been shaped more by making, observing and refining than by theory alone. I’m drawn to work that’s built carefully - grids, proportion, hierarchy and type - then pushed just far enough to stop it feeling polite.
My influences are broad and sometimes contradictory. I take inspiration from Swiss modernism and brutalism, but also from maximalist traditions, Mexican Talavera Poblana, religious iconography, historical protest print and other visual languages that aren’t afraid of weight, symbolism or intensity. That tension between restraint and expression is something I’m constantly exploring in my work.
I currently work full-time at a creative agency, designing within real-world constraints like budgets, timelines and stakeholder feedback. Alongside that, I take on freelance and self-initiated projects as a way to experiment more freely, develop my own visual language and deepen my understanding of the craft. Those two modes feed each other: one keeps me grounded, the other allows me to continue exploring.
I don’t approach projects with a fixed visual style. Instead, I try to build systems that suit the brief, the audience and the context, whether the outcome needs to be quiet and functional or bold and expressive. I’m less interested in trends and more interested in work that feels considered, durable and confident over time.
This site is a selection of projects that reflect how I think and work right now. Like the practice itself, it’s very much a work in progress.
